“Éxodo” in English Exodus, from Greek éxodos, means etymologically “a going out”, “travel out” or “marching out”, from ex- “out” + (h) odós “way”. The term refers to a departure or emigration, normally of a large number of people to a certain destination. As the Eurozone undergoes continuing financial instability, immigration rose especially from those countries facing the sharpest economic crises, notably Greece and Spain, to more financial stable northern states, among which Germany stands as a particularly popular destination.
Verónica Losantos portrays here young Spaniards who migrated to Berlin in the context of the financial and economic crisis. The series is composed of several portraits, taken in the current room of the portrayed person, and detailed images attempting to capture the essence of these characters, offering a contrast between the subject and its context, and thus revealing some unresolved tensions implicit in their new lifestyles.
Her pictures seem to reveal the invisible traces of a silent fight: the integration, the adaptation and the domestication of the difference. A constant exploration of the notion of “home”, conjugating the verb “to live” in a different language, translating the “self” to a different context. Identifying if the new place is a point of departure, a transient place or a true home remains still a mystery that only time will tell.

“Éxodo” auf Englisch Exodus, aus dem Griechischen Exodos bedeutet etymologisch “auswandern” oder “marschieren”, von Ex-”out” + (h) Odos “Weg”. Der Begriff bezieht sich auf eine Abweichung oder Auswanderung, in der Regel von eine große Anzahl von Menschen zu einem bestimmten Ziel.
Da in Europa weiterhin finanzielle Instabilität durchläuft, ensteht erhöhte Zuwanderung, vor allem aus den Ländern die die Wirtschaftskrise konfrontieren müssen, insbesondere Griechenland und Spanien, nach finanzielle stabile nördlichen Staaten, darunter Deutschland, das als ein besonders beliebtes Ziel steht.
Verónica Losantos porträtiert in ihrem Projekt “Èxodo” junge Spanier, die im Rahmen der Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise nach Deutschland emigriert sind. Die Serie besteht aus mehreren Porträts und Stillleben, die in der aktueller Wohnung der porträtierte Person aufgenommen würden , und versucht, die neue Situation dieser Menschen darzustellen. Sie bietet einen Kontrast zwischen dem Subjekt und seinem Kontext und enthüllt dadurch indirekt einige ungelöste Spannungen in ihrem neuen Lebensstil.
Ihre Bilder scheinen die unsichtbaren Spuren eines stillen Kampfes zu offenbaren, wie beispielsweise mit der Integration, der Anpassung und mit der Annäherung an eine neue Kultur. Eine ständige Auseinandersetzung mit den Begriffen des “Zuhauses” und des “Selbst” in einer neuen Umgebung. Ob der neue Ort ein Ausgangspunkt, ein temporärer Wohnsitz oder eine wahre Heimat wird, bleibt immernoch ein Rätsel, das nur die Zeit lösen kann.
